Was Wel-Met formally a "Jewish" Camp?

I know nearly everyone was Jewish and we had Shabat on Friday's but was there anything in the Wel-Met 'charter' that formally established a religious basis for camp life?

many jewish elements

I don't know about the charter but there were many more Jewish elements in camp life than just Friday night candle lighting. Some examples: Friday night cultural arts program... Saturday morning 'oneg'... "kosher-style" dining (e.g., milk was not served with meat meals and there was no pork)... singing "Mayim"...

Charter of Wel-Met

The orginial Charter of Wel-Met should be located at the Center where the reunion is taking place. It was all started as a form of land donation, the specifics of it are stated in the charter. As the Camp grew, the charter was amended.

You can do some research about via the web, that is how I found out that some of the documents are being stored a the Center.

not lard - "crisco"

That white stuff was not lard but "crisco" - some sort of hydrogenated vegetable shortening. Horrible for the arteries but not "treyf".

wel-met as a Jewish camp

Hi Guys-

I'm actually in possesion of copies of many of the original Wel-Met organizational documents.

Wel-Met was founded as the "Metropolitan Jewish Centers Camp Association, Inc." in 1935. Its original Board of Directors was made up of representatives of Jewish Community Centers from around NYC and Westchester. That's where the Jewish cultural and religious influence comes from. And the name Wel-Met is a derivation of the camp's original sponsors- The Metropolitan Section of the Jewish Welfare Fund.

Wel-Met opened in 1935 on a rented campsite at Lake Tiorati at Bear Mountain State Park. It later purchased the sites in the Catskills as it grew.

Copies of the original documents and other interesting "stuff" will be on display at the reunion at Goddard Riverside on June 30th. Hope to see you there.
